PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:

With summer winding down and fall fast approaching I would like to take this time to say thanks to our summer activity chairpersons. Patsy Johnson (women’s sand volleyball), Mike Markland (men’s senior softball), Michelle Schmidt (women’s softball) and Tim Longardner & Mark Reisgies (golf). Many people take these activities for granted but it would’t be possible without these hard working volunteers.

With fall come’s many indoor youth activities. Keep an eye out for information regarding basketball, bowling, hockey and gymnastics. If your children haven’t participated in a Turner youth event maybe this should be the year. You won’t regret it.

This years Johnny Appleseed Festival will be celebrated the weekend of September 20 and 21. This is without a doubt our second largest fund raiser and we would have a hard time surviving without it. Please, please take a couple hours out of your weekend to come out and help. There are sign up sheets on the downstairs bulletin board.

Your club had the distinction of hosting the Turners National Convention last month and I would like to thank all of the volunteers who made this possible. From what I’ve heard it was a big success and we received rave reviews from all of our out of town delegates.

See you at the club

Jim Markland

2008 Men’s City Slow Pitch Tournament

This year’s tournament was played at your club the week of August 11th through the 15th. Twenty three teams entered this year’s tournament with the hopes of being crowned city champion. It has been extremely evident that our leagues are without a doubt the strongest in the city with the top 4 teams all coming from our league.

Long Shots defeated the 412 Club in the championship game 14-12. Thanks to everyone that helped make this tournament a success

The National Convention Report

The National Convention held August 1st & 2nd was a great success. Congratulations to Barbara Riley on being reelected National Cultural Chairperson & Terry Bodine, elected the new National Bowling Chairman.

The National Officers and delegates had nothing but praise for our society and members for the efficiency of the office workers, the hospitality and accessibility of the club. The final reports due to all attendees were done by supper time Saturday evening in the past years, this wasn’t done until the next day. The National Secretary said” On a scale of one to ten, we were a twelve”!!!

This success took the work and co-operation of everyone. A HUGE THANK YOU to all members who helped with:

*The committee and advisors, who worked this past year to set up publicity, hotels, pictures,            registration, portfolios, supplies and the book.

*The sign maker                                             *The grounds crew

*The Gym Painting crew                                *The set up and tear down crew

Cultural Competition at District Level

Host: Fort Wayne Turners

ATTENTION!     ATTENTION!     ATTENTION!

On Friday October 31st and Saturday November 1st Fort Wayne Turners will host the District “Playdays” which consists of Bowling, Cultural Exhibit and performances; and the Miss Central States District of American Turners Pageant. We will revive the Cultural aspect of this event. You must be a Turner Member in good standing to participate.

The Miss Central States Pageant will be held at 8:00pm on Saturday, November 1st on the stage in our gymnasium. A practice will be in the afternoon. A DRESSY TYPE DRESS WILL BE REQUIRED. Much easier on your pocketbook if you borrow a dress, long or short, your preference. An entrant must be 14 to 19 years of age at the time of the event. You may have an escort on stage (your father or a friend). One may be appointed for you if you prefer. The winner will be awarded a Tiara and a dozen Red roses along with the title of Miss Central States District of American Turners. A 1st and 2nd Runner Up will also be chosen. Central States District includes nine Societies from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Each society will be allowed two entries. No late entries after the expiration date of October 15th, 2008. We need this time to collect a short Resume of you to present on stage. Must have three (3) Societies entered to host this event.

If we have more than two and no less than 5 or 6 girls interested in entering the pageant, we will have to conduct a pageant for our local society only. This will have to be held no later than October 10th or 11th.

The exhibit and performance is for AMATEUR artists and crafters. You cannot make over one fourth (1/4) of your annual income from any item you enter. The balances of the rules appear at the top of the entry form. Items to be entered are listed on the CLASSIFICATION sheet. Eligible Age Groups range from 1 to 101 years. Read the rules on the entry and classification sheets only. They will be at the left end of the bar, unless there is room on the big bulletin board. All items entered in the exhibit must have an identification label attached and may not be over two (2) years old. Ribbons will be award: First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention. Non Turner members will judge all Cultural events.

You may bring your items to the club on Thursday evening, October 30th, upstairs in the Dining Room or the kids gymnastic room. (depends on how many entries we have). All other entries will be taken in on Friday evening.

WE WILL BE AUDITING SATURDAY AFTERNOON BEGINNING AT 1:00PM. THE EXHIBITS WILL BE CLOSED FOR VIEWING UNTIL THE AUDIT IS COMPLETED.

OPEN FOR VIEWING UNTIL THE PAGEANT; CLOSED TILL AFTER THE PAGEANT. THEN YOU MAY PICK UP YOUR ITEMS.

To continue!!! Okay, I assume if you have read this article to this length, you will have several questions. I have been involved with the Cultural aspect of Turners for over 25yeas. I LOVE IT!! It has been way to long since we have held any Cultural Competitions at our Society. All information about this event will be published in the September 1st and October 1st newsletter only

I am available to answer any questions and to help with your forms. Please call me at (260) 482-2140, leave a message and I will return your call if I am unavailable. I will also meet you at Turners.

VOLUNTEERS WILL BE NEEDED
